Avannaata Municipality

Avannaata Municipality is a municipality in Greenland that came into existence on January 1, 2018. It was formed from the majority of the former Qaasuitsup Municipality, an administrative division that was disbanded to create two new municipalities: Avannaata and Qeqertalik Municipality.

Geography

Avannaata Municipality encompasses an area of approximately 522,700 square kilometers, making it one of the largest municipalities in the world by area. It is located in the northwestern region of Greenland and is bordered by the Northeast Greenland National Park to the north and east. To the southeast, it shares a boundary with the Sermersooq Municipality, with the border running north-south through the center of the Greenland Ice Sheet.

The municipality's western coast extends into the Nares Strait, a body of water that separates Greenland from Canada's Ellesmere Island. The western side of Avannaata also reaches half of the formerly disputed Hans Island, a small island shared with Canada's Qiqiktaluuk Region.

Within Avannaata's territorial bounds lies the Pituffik Space Base, an enclave administered by the United States Space Force.

Settlements

The municipality includes several important settlements and towns:

  • Ilulissat: The largest town and the municipal seat of Avannaata, known for its proximity to the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • Qaanaaq: Situated in the far northwest, this settlement neighbors the international Qaanaaq Airport. It is known for its strategic location near the Nares Strait.

  • Siorapaluk: The northernmost inhabited settlement in Greenland, located near Qaanaaq, and a part of the Avannaata municipality. It is one of the northernmost permanently inhabited settlements in the world.

  • Kullorsuaq: The northernmost settlement in the Upernavik Archipelago within Avannaata, located in northwestern Greenland.

  • Aappilattoq, Avannaata: A settlement located on an island of the same name in the southern part of the Upernavik area.

Significance

Avannaata Municipality plays a crucial role in Greenland's administration and cultural heritage. It is home to the Polar Inuit, a distinct indigenous group with a rich history of arctic survival and adaptation. The region's vast, remote, and largely untouched natural landscapes provide opportunities for scientific research, particularly in glaciology and climate change studies.

The municipality's strategic location near the Arctic's international waters also has geopolitical significance, as it positions Greenland—and by extension, Denmark—in discussions about Arctic sovereignty and resource exploration.
