Atlantic Forest
The Atlantic Forest, known in Portuguese as Mata Atlântica, is a rich and diverse moist broadleaf forest that stretches along the Atlantic coast of Brazil. This forest extends from Rio Grande do Norte state in the northeast to Rio Grande do Sul state in the south, reaching inland to Paraguay and the Misiones Province of Argentina, where it is referred to as the Missionary rainforest.
The Atlantic Forest is composed of various ecoregions within different biome categories, such as seasonal moist and dry broad-leaf tropical forests, tropical and subtropical grasslands, savannas, shrublands, and mangrove forests. These ecosystems are home to an incredible diversity of flora and fauna, hosting numerous endemic species and playing a crucial role in maintaining the environmental balance of the region.
The forest is characterized by its various zones, such as the Tabuleiro forests found over moist clay soils and Tabuleiro Savannas on faster-draining sand soils. These are humid areas that depend on the water vapor from the ocean. Further inland, the Atlantic dry forests form a transition between the arid Caatinga to the northeast and the Cerrado savannas to the east.
The Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve, or Mata Atlântica Biosphere Reserve, is a significant conservation initiative aimed at protecting and restoring this vital ecosystem. Organizations such as the SOS Mata Atlântica Foundation are actively involved in efforts to preserve what remains of the forest and promote sustainable development practices in the region.
Despite its biodiversity, the Atlantic Forest has faced severe threats from deforestation, urbanization, and agriculture. It has been estimated that only a small fraction of the original forest remains intact, putting many species at risk of extinction and affecting the livelihoods of local communities.
Beyond its ecological value, the Atlantic Forest also holds cultural and historical significance. It has been an integral part of the heritage and identity of the people in the region, influencing traditional practices, beliefs, and the overall way of life.
