Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies

The Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (DKI APCSS) is a prominent institution under the aegis of the United States Department of Defense. Located in Waikiki, Hawaii, the Center is strategically positioned to address and advance security interests in the Asia-Pacific region.

History and Establishment

The Center officially commenced operations on September 4, 1995, and was originally named the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies. In September 2015, the facility was renamed in honor of Daniel K. Inouye, a distinguished U.S. Senator from Hawaii known for his contributions to national security and the Asia-Pacific community.

Mission and Objectives

DKI APCSS seeks to build capacities and communities of interest by educating, connecting, and empowering security practitioners to advance Indo-Pacific security. The Center's mission aligns with the objectives of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy and the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. It aims to foster robust relationships among security practitioners and national security establishments across the region.

Educational and Outreach Programs

As a key component of its mission, DKI APCSS focuses on Executive Education through both resident and regional events. These include resident courses attended by senior military and government decision-makers in security-related positions, as well as outreach events such as mini-courses, conferences, and research projects. These programs are designed to facilitate comprehensive dialogue on regional and global security issues among military and civilian representatives from both the United States and Asia-Pacific nations.

Regional Security Studies Center

The Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies is one of five regional centers managed by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency. The other centers include the William J. Perry Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies and the Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies. Each center is tasked with addressing security challenges specific to its respective region.

Leadership

The current director of DKI APCSS is Peter Gumataotao, a retired rear admiral (upper half) of the United States Navy. Under his leadership, the Center continues to advance its objectives of promoting peace and security through informed dialogue and cooperation.
