Anus

The anus is the external opening of the digestive tract through which feces and other waste material are expelled from the body. It plays a crucial role in the excretory system of many animals, including humans, by regulating the process of defecation. The term "anus" is derived from the Latin word meaning "ring" or "circle."

Anatomy and Function

In humans, the anus is located in the perineum, between the buttocks. It is surrounded by muscles, including the internal and external anal sphincters, which control the passage of feces. The internal sphincter is involuntary, while the external sphincter is under voluntary control, allowing for the regulation of bowel movements.

The rectum connects to the anus, and together they form the terminal portion of the digestive system. The lining of the anus is sensitive, containing numerous nerve endings, making it responsive to touch and pressure.

Development

During embryonic development, the embryo forms a dent on one side known as the blastopore, which deepens to become the archenteron, the initial phase in the formation of the gut. In deuterostomes, the blastopore develops into the anus, while the mouth forms later. Conversely, in protostomes, the blastopore forms the mouth first, and the anus develops later at the opposite end of the gut.

Common Conditions and Disorders

Imperforate Anus

An imperforate anus is a congenital defect where the rectum is improperly formed. This condition is part of a spectrum of anomalies known as anorectal malformations (ARMs) and can range from mild to severe. Surgical correction is often necessary to create a functional anus.

Anilingus, or oral-anal sex, involves the stimulation of the anus using the tongue or lips. This practice highlights the anus's sensitivity due to its high concentration of nerve endings.
