ANU School of Music
The ANU School of Music is a prominent institution within the Australian National University, located in Canberra, the capital city of Australia. It is part of the Research School of Humanities and the Arts, which itself is a division of the College of Arts and Social Sciences at ANU.
History and Evolution
The ANU School of Music was initially part of the Canberra School of Music, established in 1976. In 1988, it merged with the Canberra School of Art to form the Canberra Institute of the Arts. This entity became part of the Australian National University as the ANU Institute of the Arts in 1992.
Significant developments include the construction of the Peter Karmel Building in 2001, designed to house the jazz and percussion departments, as well as the Centre for New Media Arts. An extension to the music library was completed in the same period. However, in 2004, the functions of the National Institute of the Arts were restructured, with the schools of Music and Art integrated into the then ANU Faculty of the Arts.
Facilities
The school is renowned for its facilities, notably Llewellyn Hall, a world-class concert venue that hosts numerous performances and events. This facility not only serves as a cornerstone for the school’s musical activities but also plays a critical role in the wider Music of Canberra scene and Australian Capital Territory's cultural landscape.
Academic and Cultural Impact
The ANU School of Music has been a hub for academic excellence and cultural enrichment, offering programs that encompass a wide range of musical disciplines. Despite facing funding and staff cuts between 2011 and 2015, the school has maintained its reputation for fostering talent and contributing significantly to the national and international music scenes.
In 2025, as part of the ANU's controversial "Renew ANU" plan, the decision was made to decommission the School of Music and integrate it into the newly formed School of Creative and Cultural Practice. This marked a new chapter for the institution, reflecting the dynamic and evolving nature of arts education at ANU.
