The Anglican Diocese of Lagos is a significant diocese within the Anglican Province of Lagos, which is part of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion). This diocese is one of the 13 dioceses within the province, which itself is one of the 14 ecclesiastical provinces that make up the Church of Nigeria.
Historical Background
Established as part of the Church Missionary Society's efforts to expand Anglican influence in Africa, the Anglican Diocese of Lagos has played a crucial role in the religious and social landscape of Nigeria. One of its notable leaders was Joseph Abiodun Adetiloye, who served as bishop from 1985 to 1999 before becoming the Primate of all Nigeria. His tenure saw the establishment of the Lagos Anglican Bible College (LABICO) and the relocation of the CMS Grammar School to Bariga.
Another prominent figure in the diocese was Seth Irunsewe Kale, who served from 1963 to 1975. Before his episcopacy, he was the Principal of St. Andrew's Teacher Training College and Dean of Anglican Schools and Colleges.
