The Anglican Diocese of Ijesa North East is a prominent religious jurisdiction within the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion. It is part of the larger Anglican Province of Ibadan, one of the 14 ecclesiastical provinces that structure the Anglican Church in Nigeria. The Diocese was established in recognition of the growing Anglican community in the Ijesa North East region, which is located in Osun State, Nigeria.
The diocese was inaugurated on October 29, 2009, during the Episcopal Synod of the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion. The establishment of the diocese was aimed at better serving the spiritual and administrative needs of Anglicans in the region. The creation of new dioceses within the Anglican Church is a common practice to accommodate growing congregations and improve governance and pastoral care.
Upon its establishment, Joseph Olusola was consecrated as the pioneer Bishop of the Diocese. His leadership marked the beginning of a structured ecclesiastical framework aimed at fostering the growth and spiritual development of the Anglican faithful in the area. Bishop Olusola has been instrumental in the expansion of church activities, development of church infrastructure, and the deepening of religious education among parishioners.
The Diocese is headquartered in Ipetu-Ijesa, a town within Ijesaland, known for its rich cultural heritage and predominantly Christian population. The town is home to St. Paul's Cathedral, which serves as the principal church and the Bishop's seat. The cultural and religious life in Ijesaland is characterized by a blend of traditional Yoruba customs and Christian beliefs, reflecting the historical presence of Christianity in the region.
As part of the Anglican Province of Ibadan, the Diocese of Ijesa North East collaborates with other dioceses to advance the mission and outreach of the Anglican Communion. It is one of 17 dioceses within the province, each led by its respective Bishop. The Diocese actively participates in provincial synods and contributes to the collective decision-making process that shapes the future direction of the Anglican Church in Nigeria.
