Andover is a town located in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. Established originally in 1642 and officially incorporated in 1646, Andover is a town rich in history and culture. As of the 2020 census, Andover had a population of 36,569 residents. It lies approximately 20 miles north of Boston and 4 miles south of Lawrence. Part of the town is designated as the census-designated place of Andover. This town is twinned with its namesake: Andover, Hampshire, England.
Historical Background
Before the arrival of European settlers, the area now known as Andover was inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Massachusett to the south of the Merrimack River, and the Pennacooks to the north. The Massachusett referred to the area as Cochichawick. The land was transferred to European settlers on May 16, 1649, by Cutshamache, the Sagamore of the Massachusett, who sold the area known as Cochichawick.

It is located in Andover and has been a cornerstone of education since its founding in 1778.
