The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), commonly referred to as the All England Club, is a prestigious private members' club situated at Church Road in Wimbledon, London. It is most renowned as the host of the annual Wimbledon Championships, the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world and one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments.

History

The club was founded in 1868, initially as the All England Croquet Club. With the growing popularity of lawn tennis, a variant of the ancient game of tennis, the club introduced a lawn tennis court in 1875. The name was then changed to the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club in 1877, the same year the first Wimbledon Championship was held.

The first-ever men's Singles Championship was played, and the tournament was won by Spencer Gore. The women's tournament was introduced in 1884, marking the beginning of what would become an annual sporting tradition.

Facilities

The All England Club is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities that include numerous grass courts, the most famous being Centre Court, known for its iconic retractable roof. The introduction of the roof in 2009 allowed for uninterrupted play during rain, a common occurrence in the English summer. Court No. 1 also has a retractable roof, which was completed in 2019.

The club's grounds include a museum dedicated to the history of tennis, with exhibits on previous champions like Roger Federer and Serena Williams, and advancements in the sport.

Membership

Membership to the All England Club is highly exclusive and primarily by invitation. The club has approximately 500 members, including honorary members such as past Wimbledon Champions. The nature of the club's exclusivity enhances its reputation as one of the most prestigious sporting clubs globally.
