Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis
The Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis is a sprawling intercommunal structure situated in the southeast of France, within the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region. Officially established in January 2016, this metropolis was formed through the amalgamation of the Communauté urbaine Marseille Provence Métropole and five additional communautés d'agglomération. It encompasses the Bouches-du-Rhône, Var, and Vaucluse departments.
Structure and Population
The Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis covers a vast area of 3,149.2 km². As of 2018, it boasted a population of approximately 1,889,666 residents, with Marseille proper accounting for 868,277 individuals and Aix-en-Provence housing 143,097 inhabitants. This makes it a significant urban region, both in terms of size and demographic density, following Paris in urban prominence within France.
Governance
Governance of the metropolis is managed by the Metropolitan Council. Notably, Martine Vassal, a prominent figure in French politics and a member of The Republicans, has presided over the Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis since 2018.
