Aircraft Classification Number – Pavement Classification Number Method

The Aircraft Classification Number (ACN) – Pavement Classification Number (PCN) method is a standardized system used internationally for the evaluation and classification of airport pavements. This methodology was developed and promulgated by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in 1981 and served as the official pavement rating system for aircraft operations exceeding a mass of 5700 kg until 2020.

The ACN-PCN method offers a straightforward approach for assessing the compatibility between an aircraft and airport pavement. It compares two principal values:

  • Aircraft Classification Number (ACN): This number indicates the relative impact an aircraft of a given weight has on a pavement structure, considering a specified standard subgrade strength. The ACN is calculated based on the aircraft's weight, its configuration, and the type and strength of pavement.

  • Pavement Classification Number (PCN): This number, often accompanied by a series of letters, represents the bearing capacity of a pavement section (such as a runway, taxiway, or apron) on the same scale as the ACN. The PCN provides the maximum allowable load for unrestricted operations.

System Implementation

The ACN-PCN method has been widely adopted by airport authorities worldwide, facilitating the safe and efficient operation of aircraft by ensuring that pavements can accommodate the expected traffic load. Airports assign a PCN value to each pavement, which can then be compared against the ACN of an aircraft to determine whether the pavement can support the aircraft without causing excessive wear or damage.

Limitations and Evolution

Over time, the ACN-PCN method faced challenges due to advances in pavement design techniques. Emerging methodologies, such as the Linear Elastic Analysis (LEA) and Finite Element Method (FEM), provided more detailed and accurate assessments of pavement performance, leading to inconsistencies with the traditional ACN-PCN system.

Recognizing the need for an updated framework, the ICAO developed the Aircraft Classification Rating – Pavement Classification Rating (ACR-PCR) method, which is expected to replace the ACN-PCN system. The ACR-PCR system aims to incorporate modern engineering principles and better reflect the complex interactions between aircraft and pavement structures.
