173rd Airborne Brigade

The 173rd Airborne Brigade (known as the "Sky Soldiers") is an elite airborne infantry brigade combat team (IBCT) of the United States Army, headquartered in Vicenza, Italy. The brigade is a rapid deployment force, ready to respond to crises in Europe and other parts of the world as part of the United States European Command.

History

Activated in 1915, the brigade initially served as the 173rd Infantry Brigade. It saw service in World War II but is best known for its extensive involvement in the Vietnam War.

Vietnam War Engagements

The 173rd gained notoriety for its participation in significant operations such as Operation Hump and Operation Junction City. The brigade is perhaps most famous for the Battle of Dak To, an intense engagement against North Vietnamese forces that resulted in heavy casualties but showcased the unit's valor. Members of the brigade received over 7,700 decorations during the war, including more than 6,000 Purple Hearts.

The brigade returned to the United States in 1972, where elements such as the 1st and 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment were absorbed into the 101st Airborne Division, sometimes referred to as the "Screaming Eagles". The 3rd Battalion, 319th Field Artillery Regiment was reassigned within the same division.

Reactivation and Modern Deployments

Reactivated in 2000, the brigade has since participated in multiple tours in the Middle East in support of the War on Terror. The brigade's current structure includes the 173rd Brigade Support Battalion, which provides logistical and operational support.
