Zamora Cathedral
The Zamora Cathedral, located in the city of Zamora, in the autonomous community of Castile and León, Spain, is a remarkable example of Romanesque architecture. The cathedral is situated above the right bank of the Duero River, offering a scenic view of the surrounding landscape. It is a pivotal religious site within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Zamora.
Historical Background
A previous church, also entitled El Salvador ("Holy Savior"), existed during the reign of King Alfonso VII of Castile. However, it was reportedly in ruins. King Alfonso VII, along with his sister Sancha Raimúndez, sponsored the construction of the new cathedral under the supervision of Bishop Esteban.
Architectural Features
The cathedral is noted for its impressive dome which shares architectural cues with other churches in the Duero Valley, such as those in Salamanca, Toro, Plasencia, and Évora. Various inspirations have been proposed for the cathedral's dome, ranging from Byzantine influences to French Romanesque styles. Scholar Miguel Sobrino has suggested the design might have been inspired by a now-lost Romanesque dome over the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
Cathedral Museum
The cathedral's museum, located within the 17th-century cloister, houses an exceptional collection of Flemish tapestries. These tapestries, dating from the 15th to the 17th centuries, depict various historical scenes including the Trojan War, Hannibal's campaign in Italy, and events from the life of Tarquin, the legendary Etruscan king of Rome.
Cultural Significance
Zamora Cathedral holds a significant place in Spanish history and culture. The Treaty of Zamora, an important historical event, took place at the cathedral. This treaty marked the resolution of hostilities between King Alfonso VII of León and King Afonso I of Portugal, in the presence of Cardinal Guido de Vico.
