Vichy: A Historical and Modern Perspective
Vichy France
Vichy France, officially known as the "French State," was a regime established during World War II following the defeat and subsequent occupation of France by Nazi Germany in 1940. This collaborationist government was led by Marshal Philippe Pétain and was headquartered in the spa town of Vichy located in the central French department of Allier.
After the Fall of France, the country was divided into two main zones: the occupied zone controlled directly by Germany, and the so-called "free zone" or zone libre, where the Vichy regime exercised nominal authority. Despite its semblance of autonomy, Vichy France operated under the heavy influence of Nazi Germany, implementing various collaborative policies including the deportation of Jews and other minority groups.
The Vichy government maintained a complex relationship with Nazi Germany, balancing collaboration with attempts to preserve some degree of French sovereignty. Notable was the presence of the Vichy French Navy and Vichy French Air Force, which were required to remain neutral under the terms of the armistice but faced internal struggles between collaboration and resistance. Many individuals, such as the group known as "The Eighty," opposed the regime and faced persecution or joined the French Resistance.
The Vichy regime's end came with the Allied liberation of France in 1944, after which the country was reintegrated and Charles de Gaulle emerged as a leading figure in post-war France.
