Underworld (Band)

Underworld is a renowned British electronic music group formed in 1987 in Cardiff, Wales. The band is principally the collaborative effort of Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, who have been influential figures in the electronic music scene for decades. Known for their atmospheric, progressive compositions and dynamic live performances, Underworld has left a significant imprint on a wide range of artists and genres.

Formation and Early Years

Before becoming Underworld, Karl Hyde and Rick Smith were part of a band called the Screen Gemz in the late 1970s, heavily influenced by Kraftwerk and reggae. The duo went through several transformations, including a stint under the name Freur, with which they released the album "Doot-Doot" in 1983. However, Freur disbanded in 1986 after issues with their record label.

In 1987, Hyde, Smith, and other members including Thomas, Burrows, and bassist Baz Allen formed Underworld. The band was named after the 1985 horror film "Underworld," which was scored by Freur. This early version of the band, often referred to as "Underworld Mk1," disbanded in 1990 after financial difficulties.

Breakthrough and Success

The pivotal moment for Underworld came with the release of their album Dubnobasswithmyheadman in 1994. This marked their transformation into a more streamlined trio, with the addition of DJ Darren Emerson. The album was a breakthrough, establishing Underworld as a significant force in the electronic music genre with singles like "Cowgirl" and "Dirty Epic."

Their music gained immense popularity after featuring in film soundtracks, most notably in Danny Boyle's 1996 film Trainspotting, which included their iconic track "Born Slippy .NUXX." This exposure helped cement their status as electronic music pioneers.

Continued Evolution

Underworld continued to evolve their sound throughout the late 1990s and 2000s. They released several successful albums, including Second Toughest in the Infants and Beaucoup Fish, both of which received critical acclaim and commercial success.

The band also embarked on innovative projects such as the Riverrun Project, a series of online EPs, and the Drift Project from 2018 to 2019, which consisted of weekly music and video releases. Their exploration of multimedia and innovative online releases kept them at the forefront of the electronic music scene.

Cultural Impact and Legacy

Underworld's influence extends beyond their musical releases. Their collaboration with Danny Boyle continued as they scored the soundtrack for his stage adaptation of Frankenstein and were involved in the music direction for the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony.

Their atmospheric soundscapes, Hyde's cryptic lyrics, and their ability to adapt and innovate have earned them a lasting place in the history of modern music. Underworld's legacy is reflected in the numerous artists they have influenced and the continuing popularity of their music.
