Tucumán Province is a vibrant and historically rich region located in the northwest of Argentina. It is renowned for its cultural, geographical, and economic significance. The capital city of the province is San Miguel de Tucumán, which is often simply referred to as Tucumán.
Geography
Tucumán Province is bordered by Salta, Santiago del Estero, and Catamarca. Despite being the smallest Argentine province in terms of area, it boasts diverse landscapes, including lush valleys and mountainous regions, offering a unique blend of natural beauty.
History
The history of Tucumán dates back to the mid-16th century when the Peruvian governor Pedro de la Gasca granted Juan Núñez de Prado the territory. Núñez de Prado founded the first Spanish settlement, naming the area after Tucumamahao, a local leader. In 1565, Diego de Villarroel founded San Miguel de Tucumán, which became the focal point of the province.
The region was originally known as the Provincia de Tucumán, Juríes y Diaguitas and faced numerous indigenous attacks, prompting the relocation of San Miguel de Tucumán in 1685. This city played a crucial role in Argentina's struggle for independence, hosting the Congress of Tucumán in 1816, where the country declared its independence from Spain.

Tucumán is often referred to as the "Garden of the Republic" due to its fertile lands and agricultural productivity. The province is a leading producer of sugarcane, lemons, and other citrus fruits.
