Succession to the 52nd Da'i al-Mutlaq
The succession to the position of the 52nd Da'i al-Mutlaq became a pivotal moment in the history of the Dawoodi Bohra community. The Dawoodi Bohras are a sect within Shia Islam, and the Da'i al-Mutlaq is their spiritual leader, wielding significant religious authority.
Mohammed Burhanuddin and His Legacy
Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, the 52nd Da'i al-Mutlaq, led the community for several decades until his death in January 2014. His tenure was marked by significant community growth and development, as well as efforts to preserve the unique cultural and religious practices of the Dawoodi Bohras. As per tradition, each Da'i al-Mutlaq is required to nominate a successor, a process known as nass, which designates the next leader before the current leader's death.
Appointment of Mufaddal Saifuddin
In June 2011, following a stroke suffered by Mohammed Burhanuddin in London, the nass was publicly performed, appointing Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin as the successor. This announcement was made on June 4, 2011, and was intended to ensure a smooth transition of leadership.
The UK Charity Commission later recognized Mufaddal Saifuddin as the rightful holder of the office of Da'i al-Mutlaq, affirming the legitimacy of his appointment.
The Controversy with Khuzaima Qutbuddin
The succession was not without dispute. Khuzaima Qutbuddin, who was the Mazoon (a high-ranking position second to the Da'i al-Mutlaq), claimed that he had been privately appointed as successor by Mohammed Burhanuddin in 1965, in a private ceremony without witnesses. Qutbuddin alleged that Burhanuddin had concerns about potential conflict ("swords would be crossed") should the appointment become public knowledge at that time.
The disagreement between Mufaddal Saifuddin and Khuzaima Qutbuddin created a schism within the community. Some followers rallied around Qutbuddin, asserting his claim to leadership. In 2013, the contention became more pronounced among the community members, leading to a division of allegiances.
Impact on the Community
The leadership dispute following the death of Mohammed Burhanuddin highlighted the complexities of religious succession within the Dawoodi Bohra community. Despite the controversy, Mufaddal Saifuddin assumed the position of Da'i al-Mutlaq, continuing to lead the majority of the community. The schism, however, remains a sensitive topic, reflecting the intricate balance of tradition, authority, and personal allegiance within religious communities.
