Sister Stanislaus Kennedy
Stanislaus Kennedy, born Treasa Kennedy on June 19, 1939, and widely known as Sister Stan, was a prominent Irish nun and social activist whose work significantly impacted homelessness and social services in Ireland. She passed away on November 3, 2025.
Early Life and Religious Vocation
Treasa Kennedy joined the Religious Sisters of Charity in 1958, at the age of 18. Upon joining, she was given the religious name Sister Stanislaus. She made her profession in 1963 and was sent to Kilkenny to assist Bishop Peter Birch in establishing a network of social services. Her work with Birch was foundational in the development of social programs, including one of the first meals on wheels programs in Ireland. Birch's mentorship was pivotal in shaping her belief that the Catholic Church needed to align more closely with the needs of the poor.
Founding of Focus Ireland
In 1985, Sister Stan founded Focus Ireland, one of the country's largest organizations dedicated to addressing homelessness and providing housing solutions. Her efforts through Focus Ireland were instrumental in advocating for those at risk of homelessness and developing practical solutions to improve their living conditions.
