Royal Spanish Football Federation

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (Spanish: Real Federación Española de Fútbol, RFEF) is the principal governing body of football in Spain. Founded on 29 September 1913, the RFEF is responsible for organizing national competitions, managing the Spain national football team, and overseeing regional football federations across the country.

Historical Background

The origins of the RFEF trace back to the formation of the Federación Española de Clubs de Football (FECF) in 1909. This initial federation was established in Madrid, the capital of Spain, paving the way for organized Football in the nation. The early years of the FECF were marked by disputes which led to the creation of the Spanish Union of Football Clubs (UECF) in 1912. This split in Spanish football saw parallel tournaments being held by both factions, ultimately leading to the need for consolidation under a single governing body.

The RFEF was officially founded in 1913, following Spain's reintegration into the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). Madrid FC, played a pivotal role in the early years of the federation and Spain's re-admission to FIFA after losing membership between 1905 and 1913.

Structure and Responsibilities

National Teams

The RFEF is responsible for the management of both the Spain men's national football team and the Spain women's national football team. The men's team, known popularly as "La Roja," has achieved notable success on the international stage, including winning the FIFA World Cup in 2010 and the UEFA European Championship in 1964, 2008, and 2012.

Domestic Competitions

One of the key functions of the RFEF is organizing domestic football competitions. The Copa del Rey, an annual knockout tournament, is one of the oldest football competitions in Spain, organized by the RFEF since its inception. Additionally, the RFEF oversees the lower tiers of the Spanish football league system.

Regional Federations

Spain is divided into 19 autonomous regions, each with its own regional football federation operating under the umbrella of the RFEF. These regional bodies ensure the development and governance of football at local levels, promoting the sport across various age groups and communities.

Collaborations and Influence

The RFEF collaborates with several international and domestic organizations to foster the growth of football. It is involved with both UEFA, the governing body for European football, and FIFA on global matters, and works closely with the Spanish government to ensure the sport's development aligns with national sports policies.
