South Bronx Greenway
The South Bronx Greenway is a transformative urban project aimed at revitalizing the waterfront and enhancing recreational spaces in the South Bronx, a historic district within the borough of the Bronx in New York City. This ambitious initiative encompasses a network of parks, bike paths, and pedestrian routes that connect various neighborhoods and provide much-needed access to the scenic waterfront areas.
Background and Development
The vision for the South Bronx Greenway was spearheaded by several community advocates, including Majora Carter, through her work with the Sustainable South Bronx organization. The project received funding from various sources, such as a $300,000 grant from the Barry Segal Family Foundation and a substantial commitment of $20 million from Sustainable South Bronx itself. These funds were used to create Greenway Steward positions to facilitate education, outreach, and tree care, as well as the construction of street furniture and other infrastructure in the area.
Key Components
One of the pivotal components of the South Bronx Greenway is the Randalls Island Connector. Completed in 2016, this connector provides a vital pedestrian and bicycle path linking Randalls Island to the Mott Haven neighborhood in the Bronx. This route, along with the Wards Island Bridge, forms a continuous pathway that is entirely segregated from vehicular traffic, making it safe and accessible for non-motorized travel between the Bronx and Manhattan.
The project also includes Hunts Point Riverside Park, a significant recreational destination, which was awarded the 2016 Merit Award by the New York City chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. The park now offers essential public open space and shoreline access in the South Bronx, creating inter-tidal marshes and a stormwater runoff control pool, which are integral to the greenway's environmental objectives.
Environmental Significance
The South Bronx Greenway has been instrumental in the fight against environmental racism and fostering environmental justice in the area. By providing green spaces and improved access to natural resources, the project has countered decades of environmental neglect in the South Bronx, contributing to the area's socio-economic rejuvenation.
