Sony Music Entertainment
Sony Music Entertainment (SME), commonly referred to as Sony Music, is an American multinational music company owned by the Sony Group Corporation. It is one of the world's leading record companies and is headquartered in New York City.
History and Evolution
Sony Music Entertainment's roots trace back to the acquisition of CBS Records by Sony in 1987 for $2 billion. The transaction was significant as it marked Sony's entry into the music industry, with CBS retaining the rights to its name for music recordings but granting Sony a temporary license to use it. CBS, which was then the only "big three" American television networks to own a record company, had expanded its music publishing business in the early 1980s by acquiring MGM/UA Entertainment Co.'s music publishing arm. This laid a foundation for Sony Music's growth.
In 1983, a pivotal year for the music industry, Sony, one of the developers behind the compact disc, constructed a production plant in Japan through a joint venture. This allowed CBS to supply some of the first compact disc releases to the American market. The evolution of digital music media played a critical role in the company's expansion.
Divisions and Labels
Sony Music encompasses a wide range of music labels. Some of its most notable divisions include:
- Columbia Records: A historic label known for its diverse roster of artists.
- RCA Records: One of the oldest and most prestigious labels with a rich legacy.

Sony Music has engaged in numerous strategic partnerships and acquisitions to expand its influence. In the UK, for instance, it celebrated a successful BRIT Awards presence in 2017, winning seven out of eleven awards. This success came alongside key acquisitions such as the formation of Insanity Records with Insanity Management, which signed artists like Craig David.
