Development and Features
The development of Shahed drones can be traced back to Iran's efforts to bolster its military capabilities through indigenous technologies. This initiative was partly fueled by the country's strategic need to counteract foreign threats and enhance the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) capabilities. A notable instance that accelerated Iran's drone development was the seizing of an American Lockheed Martin RQ-170 Sentinel UAV in December 2011, which Iran's cyberwarfare unit commandeered. These drones have been utilized by Russia to conduct significant aerial attacks on Ukrainian targets. For instance, on October 17, 2022, Russian forces deployed Iranian Shahed 136 drones in an attack on Kyiv, resulting in civilian casualties, including a tragic incident involving a pregnant woman. Such attacks have demonstrated the lethal effectiveness of Shahed drones in modern warfare.
Ukraine has responded to these threats by deploying advanced countermeasures, including interceptor drones, to shoot down incoming Shahed drones. Despite these efforts, the sheer volume and persistence of drone attacks have posed a significant challenge to Ukrainian defenses.

The proliferation of Shahed drones has significant implications for global security dynamics. Their affordability and ease of production mean that they can be manufactured at scale, as evidenced by facilities like the Yelabuga drone factory, which reportedly aims to produce thousands of Shahed-type drones annually.
