Santa Comba Dão

Santa Comba Dão is a city and municipality located in the Viseu District in Portugal. As of the 2011 census, the population of the municipality was approximately 11,597, spread across an area of 111.95 km². The city itself has a population of around 3,300 inhabitants. Santa Comba Dão is characterized by its picturesque setting near the confluence of the Dão River and the Mondego River.

Historical Significance

Santa Comba Dão has a rich historical backdrop. It is famously associated with António de Oliveira Salazar, the former Prime Minister and leader of Portugal from 1932 to 1968, who was born here in 1889. Salazar established the Estado Novo (New State), a corporatist authoritarian regime that lasted until the Carnation Revolution in 1974.
