Types of Road Sensors
Inductive Loop Sensors
Inductive loop sensors are among the most traditional types of road sensors. Installed beneath the road surface, they consist of wire loops that use electromagnetic fields to detect the presence and passage of vehicles. When a vehicle passes over or stops on the loop, it changes the inductance, allowing the sensor to detect vehicle presence and count the number of vehicles.
Infrared Sensors
Infrared sensors are non-intrusive devices that come in two varieties: passive and active detectors. Passive IR sensors measure the energy emitted or reflected by vehicles and other objects. In contrast, active IR sensors emit their own energy and measure the reflected signals. These sensors are beneficial because they can operate effectively in various weather conditions.
Microwave Radar Detectors
Microwave radar detectors use electromagnetic waves to detect vehicle presence as well as speed. These detectors are often mounted on structures over or next to the road. They are exceptionally useful in detecting pedestrians at crossings and can function efficiently in all weather conditions.
Video Image Processing
Video image processing involves the use of cameras to monitor traffic flow and vehicle behavior. This technology processes captured video images to extract useful data. These systems are versatile, providing high levels of detail about traffic conditions.
Acoustic and Ultrasound Sensors
These sensors use sound waves to detect vehicles. While acoustic sensors capture sound emitted by vehicles, ultrasound sensors emit sound waves that bounce off the vehicles. Both are non-intrusive and can be used in combination with other sensor types for enhanced accuracy.
