Luxury touring limousines began to emerge in France with companies like De Dietrich, and similar models were built in the US by Welch and Pierce Arrow.

The first known recreational fifth-wheeler was the Auto Salon Deluxe, constructed in Belgium for Baron Crawhez by Auto-Mixte Pescatore in 1913. The formation of the Tin Can Tourists in 1919 marked the inception of organized RV clubs in America.

The RV Industry Today

The RV industry has seen unprecedented growth, particularly since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. With consumer interest in RV travel soaring, October 2021 marked a record production month with over 58,000 units manufactured in North America. The first four months of 2021 witnessed an 86% increase in wholesale RV shipments compared to 2020.

In the United States, approximately 85% of RVs are manufactured in Indiana, with Elkhart County being known as the "RV Capital of the World". This area alone accounts for nearly two-thirds of the country's RV production, making it a pivotal location for the RV industry.
