Queensland Parliament

The Parliament of Queensland is the unicameral legislative body of the Australian state of Queensland. As the sole legislative chamber, it embodies the Legislative Assembly of Queensland, established under the Constitution of Queensland. Notably, it has been the only unicameral state legislature in Australia since its upper chamber, the Legislative Council, was abolished in 1922.

History

The Parliament was founded on 22 May 1860, under a year after the creation of the Colony of Queensland in June 1859. The initial sessions were convened in military and convict barracks repurposed for legislative use, located on Queen Street, Brisbane, the state capital. A significant early issue for the Parliament was immigration, reflecting the colony's growth concerns.

Structure and Function

The Queensland Parliament exercises plenary legislative power over the state. However, Commonwealth laws take precedence in the event of conflict. The Governor of Queensland plays a ceremonial role, including assenting to bills, issuing writs for elections, and executing executive powers on the advice of the Queensland Executive Council.

Innovations and Milestones

Queensland was a pioneer in electoral reform, becoming the first Australian state to mandate compulsory voting at state elections in 1915. Technological advancements have been integrated into parliamentary proceedings, with live audio broadcasts commencing in April 2003, followed by video broadcasts in June 2007.

Legislative Sessions and Assembly

The Legislative Assembly convenes in the historic Parliament House, Brisbane. Currently, the 58th Parliament of Queensland is in session, following the 57th Parliament of Queensland. The Premier of Queensland and other cabinet members are appointed by the Governor and are collectively accountable to Parliament.
