Privy Council
A privy council is a body that functions as an advisory committee to a head of state. The term "privy" derives from the French word privé, meaning private or secret, which underscores the confidential nature of the council's advising role. Historically, such councils were more prevalent in monarchical governments, providing counsel to ruling monarchs on critical matters of state. While the prevalence of monarchy has waned, some privy councils continue to exist, either maintaining their traditional roles or adapting to new governmental frameworks.
United Kingdom's Privy Council
The Privy Council of the United Kingdom, also known as His Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council, serves as a formal body of advisors to the British monarch. It includes senior politicians, who are current or former members of either the House of Commons or the House of Lords, as well as various judges and clergy. The Lord President of the Council is the presiding officer.
One of the most significant roles of the UK Privy Council is its Judicial Committee, which serves as the highest court of appeal for the Crown Dependencies, British Overseas Territories, and some Commonwealth countries.
