People's Alliance in Sri Lanka
The People's Alliance (PA) was a significant political alliance in Sri Lanka, established in the early 1990s. It was primarily led by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, which sought to consolidate various political entities under a unified banner to challenge the then-dominant United National Party.
Formation and Initial Success
The People's Alliance came into prominence under the leadership of Chandrika Kumaratunga, who was a key figure in Sri Lankan politics. The coalition was officially formed to contest the 1994 parliamentary elections. The alliance included not only the Sri Lanka Freedom Party but also other significant parties like the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and the Up-Country People's Front.
In the 1994 parliamentary elections, the People's Alliance achieved a landslide victory, securing 105 out of 225 seats in the Parliament of Sri Lanka. This victory enabled the alliance to form a government with additional support from the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, which won seven seats. The victory was a crucial turning point, marking the end of the prolonged rule of the United National Party.
Presidential Success
Following the parliamentary victory, the PA's leader, Chandrika Kumaratunga, contested and won the presidential election held on November 9, 1994. She secured 65.2% of the votes, marking the largest landslide victory in Sri Lankan presidential history at that time. Her leadership was characterized by efforts to initiate peace talks with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), easing the Northern embargo as a gesture of goodwill, to which the LTTE responded by releasing detained police officers.
Continued Influence and Transition
The People's Alliance continued to hold power in subsequent years, successfully winning the 1999 Sri Lankan presidential election and the 2000 parliamentary elections. However, the alliance faced a setback in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it was defeated by the United National Front, led by the United National Party.
In 2004, a new political coalition, the United People's Freedom Alliance, was formed, which was also led by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. This new alliance absorbed most of the members of the People's Alliance, effectively marking the end of the PA as a distinct political entity.
