Paterson, New Jersey
Paterson, located in Passaic County, is the largest city within the county and serves as its county seat in the state of New Jersey, United States. A prominent mill town within the New York–New Jersey metropolitan area, Paterson has historically been known as "Silk City" due to its dominant role in silk production during the late 19th century.
History
The area now known as Paterson was originally inhabited by the Acquackanonk tribe, part of the Lenape people, also referred to as the Delaware Indians. The Native American name for the region was Lenapehoking. The Dutch were the first Europeans to claim the land, naming it New Netherlands, which was later claimed by the British as the Province of New Jersey.
The city was founded by the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures, which played a crucial role in establishing Paterson as the cradle of the Industrial Revolution in America. The city was named after William Paterson, a statesman, signer of the United States Constitution, and Governor of New Jersey, who signed the charter establishing the Town of Paterson in 1792.

Paterson is situated in a strategic location within the New York–New Jersey metropolitan area, making it a hub for immigrants. The city has become a primary destination for Hispanic immigrants, as well as those from Turkey, the Arab world, and South Asia.

The Great Falls of the Passaic River provided a source of hydroelectric power, crucial for powering the mills and factories that fueled the city's industrial growth.

Paterson is home to several educational institutions, including William Paterson University, located in nearby Wayne, New Jersey. The city also hosts Eastside High School, serving the eastern section of Paterson.

Paterson has a vibrant cultural scene, enriched by its diverse population. The city's history and culture have even inspired the film "Paterson," directed by Jim Jarmusch, which showcases a week in the life of a bus driver in the city.

Paterson has been home to several notable figures, including Colt Paterson, named after one of the city's most famous residents, Samuel Colt, an inventor and industrialist who produced the first-ever revolver in the city.
