Paschal Baylon
Paschal Baylón (24 May 1540 – 17 May 1592) was a Spanish Catholic religious brother known for his deep devotion and humility. He was a member of the Order of Friars Minor, a Franciscan religious order founded by Saint Francis of Assisi. Baylón is celebrated as a patron saint of Eucharistic congresses and confraternities.
Early Life
Paschal Baylón was born on 16 May 1540 in Torrehermosa, a village in the Kingdom of Aragon, which at the time was part of the Spanish Empire. He was born on the feast of Pentecost, which inspired his given name. His parents, Martin and Elizabeth Jubera Baylón, were poor but devout peasants. From a young age, Paschal was tasked with shepherding to help support his family.
Paschal showed a keen interest in learning, teaching himself to read by asking others for assistance. Despite his family's limited means, he was known for his generosity, often sharing his own meals with the poor.
Religious Life
In 1564, Paschal joined the Order of Friars Minor and lived as a lay brother. He was dedicated to a life of simplicity and service, often engaged in menial tasks while practicing deep spiritual devotion. His life was marked by a strong devotion to the Eucharist, which later became a central element of his recognition as a saint.
