Parthian Language
The Parthian language, also known as Arsacid Pahlavi or Pahlawānīg, is an extinct Northwestern Iranian language that was once spoken in Parthia, a historical region located in what is now northeastern Iran. This language was predominantly in use during the period of the Parthian Empire, also referred to as the Arsacid Empire, which existed from 248 BC to 224 AD.
Historical Context
The Parthian language served as the language of state and administration for the Parthian Empire, which was a significant political and cultural entity in ancient Iran. This language was also associated with various branches of the Arsacid dynasty, such as the Arsacid dynasty of Armenia, the Arsacid dynasty of Iberia, and the Arsacid dynasty of Caucasian Albania.
Linguistic Features
Parthian is classified as a Middle Iranian language, sharing this classification with contemporaries like Middle Persian and Bactrian. The language was typically written using the Inscriptional Parthian script. This script was utilized in various official inscriptions and documents of the time.
The influence of Parthian extended to the Armenian language, with significant portions of Armenian vocabulary having been derived from Parthian loanwords. Additionally, the language contact led to some derivational morphology and syntax influence in Armenian.
Legacy and Influence
The Parthian language left an enduring influence on several modern and ancient languages. The Semnani languages and the Zaza language exhibit linguistic features that suggest a connection to Parthian, either directly or through shared ancestry within the Northwestern Iranian languages. However, further research is needed to fully understand the extent of this influence.
Parthian also shares grammatical similarities with other ancient Iranian languages, influenced by the cultural and political exchanges during the time of the Parthian Empire.
