Oesling
The Oesling (German: Ösling; Luxembourgish: Éislek) is a geographical region situated in the northern part of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. This region is an integral part of the Ardennes Mountains, which predominantly span southern Belgium.
Geography
The Oesling region is characterized by a plateau that averages around 450 meters (1,500 feet) in elevation, composed primarily of schists and sandstones. It features medium hills ranging in altitude from 400 to 500 meters. This terrain is a continuation of both the Ardennes and the Eifel regions, which extend across the border into Germany.
Administrative Division
Historically, the Oesling was part of the now-defunct Diekirch District, excluding the southern portions of the Redange, Diekirch, and Vianden Cantons. The region is predominantly rural with a scattered population, predominantly engaged in agriculture and forestry.
Culture and Cuisine
The Oesling is also known for its cultural contributions, particularly in culinary arts. A notable specialty from the region is the Éisleker Ham, also known as Oesling ham. This distinctive ham is a popular cold dish in the cuisine of Luxembourg, prepared through a meticulous process of marination.
