North-South Expressway Central Link (ELITE)
The North-South Expressway Central Link, commonly known as ELITE, is a major controlled-access highway in Malaysia. Spanning a distance of 63 kilometers (approximately 39 miles), this expressway serves as a crucial corridor connecting the separated northern and southern sections of the North-South Expressway (Malaysia). By providing a direct route between Shah Alam in Selangor and Nilai in Negeri Sembilan, the expressway facilitates the bypassing of Kuala Lumpur for interstate traffic.
Historical Context and Construction
The Central Link of the North-South Expressway was constructed by United Engineers Malaysia Berhad at an approximate cost of RM 1 billion. The concession agreement for this ambitious infrastructure project was signed in April 1994, marking a pivotal moment in Malaysia's highway development.
Features and Importance
As a high-speed, long-distance expressway, the ELITE Expressway is designed to support a default speed limit of 110 km/h (68 mph), with some designated areas permitting variations due to specific conditions. This strategic thoroughfare not only connects major urban centers but also serves as a primary access route to Putrajaya, the administrative capital of Malaysia, and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
The expressway is integral to Malaysia’s transportation network, providing seamless connectivity that enhances economic activities by reducing travel time and improving logistic efficiency across the region.
Notable Events
On 28 February 2013, the expressway experienced a significant incident when a bridge under construction by the Selangor State Development Corporation collapsed at the interchange to Bandar Nusaputra on the Putrajaya Link. This collapse was attributed to a water pipe leak, although fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Recreational Facilities
The PLUS Speedway (formerly known as ELITE Speedway) located within the USJ Rest and Service Area is noted as Malaysia’s first highway go-kart circuit. This facility adds a recreational dimension to the expressway, catering to motorsport enthusiasts and promoting tourism.
