Historical Overview
The history of Myanmar as a unified political entity dates back to the establishment of the Pyu city-states in Upper Myanmar and the Mon kingdoms in Lower Myanmar. These were founded by Tibeto-Burman-speaking migrants from what is now Yunnan. In the 9th century, the Bamar people entered Upper Myanmar, establishing their dominance and laying the foundation for the country known today.
