Abu'l-Hasan Ali of Granada, commonly referred to as Muley Hacén in Spanish, was a significant figure in the history of the Nasrid dynasty. Muley Hacén was the son of Sultan Muhammad IX, whose throne was usurped by Muhammad X due to internal turmoils. To reclaim the throne, his father sought the aid of King Enrique IV of Castile by becoming his vassal. Muley Hacén was sent to the Castilian court, where he learned to speak Castilian Spanish and became familiar with the Christian kingdom's culture and politics.
In April 1455, Muley Hacén played a pivotal role as an interpreter between King Enrique IV and his father, facilitating the latter's return to power. However, Muley Hacén soon overthrew his father, forcing him into exile in Málaga, an act that temporarily placed him at odds with Enrique IV.

After the death of his father in 1465, Muley Hacén faced a rebellion led by the arraez of Málaga, supported by Enrique IV. This conflict, lasting until 1473, ended with Muley Hacén consolidating his power and strengthening his rule. Internally, he faced familial discord, particularly with his son, Muhammad XII, also known as Boabdil, who would eventually rebel against him with the support of the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon.
