Malay Malaysians are a significant ethnic group in Malaysia, recognized officially as Bumiputras by the Malaysian government. The cultural, historical, and sociopolitical aspects of Malay Malaysians are integral to understanding the diverse makeup of Malaysia's population.
Historical Background
The Malay Malaysians have a rich history that dates back to ancient maritime trading states and kingdoms, such as Brunei, Kedah, Langkasuka, Gangga Negara, Chi Tu, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Srivijaya. These polities were primarily founded by Malayic-speaking Austronesians and Austroasiatic tribes. The term "Malay" has been extended historically to include a variety of ethnic groups within the "Malay world."
The golden age of the Malay sultanates saw the Islamization and Malayisation of various tribal communities, such as the Batak, Dayak, Orang Asli, and Orang Laut.
Culture and Society
The 1971 National Culture Policy of Malaysia plays a crucial role in defining Malaysian culture by integrating Islamic influences and emphasizing Malay cultural elements. Language is particularly significant, with Malay texts considered official cultural texts.
Cultural diversity in Malaysia is also visible in the formation of new ethnic groups such as the Peranakan, also known as "Straits Chinese," who are descendants of Chinese settlers who adopted Malay traditions while retaining elements of their Chinese culture.
Demography
According to the latest data, Bumiputras constitute 69.7% of Malaysia's population. Of this, Malay Malaysians form the largest segment, making up 57.9% of the population. They share this demographic space with other Bumiputra groups, including the indigenous peoples of Sabah and Sarawak.
Malay Malaysians speak various dialects, which can differ significantly across states, sometimes making them unintelligible to each other. Despite these linguistic diversities, the Malaysian constitution defines all Malays as Muslims, underscoring the deep connection between Malay identity and Islam.
