Lewiston, New York

Lewiston, New York is a town situated in Niagara County, within the state of New York, United States. As of the 2020 census, Lewiston has a population of approximately 15,944 inhabitants. The town encompasses the village of Lewiston, which itself had a population of 2,701 as reported in the 2010 census. The town and village are named after Morgan Lewis, who served as the Governor of New York.

Geography and Transport

Lewiston's geography is marked by the Niagara Escarpment, which provides a distinct natural backdrop for the town. The eastern border of Lewiston is defined by Townline Road, separating it from the Town of Cambria. The northern border meets the Towns of Porter and Wilson.

Lewiston is traversed by New York State Route 104, which runs as Lewiston Road on top of the Escarpment and as Ridge Road below it. The town is well-connected through three exits of Interstate 190: exit 24 at Witmer Road (New York State Route 31), exit 25A at Military Road (New York State Route 265), and exit 25B for Route 104 and the Niagara Scenic Parkway.

Historic and Cultural Landmarks

Lewiston is home to several historic landmarks, including the Frontier House, which was regarded in the early 1800s as one of the finest hotels in the United States west of Albany. Another landmark is the Clarkson House, an 1818 building now serving as a restaurant since 1958.

The Lewiston–Queenston Bridge is a significant international connection between Lewiston, New York and Queenston, Ontario. This bridge connects Interstate 190 in Lewiston to Highway 405 in Queenston, facilitating cross-border travel and trade.

Lewiston is near the Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant, a hydroelectric power station that plays a crucial role in the region's energy supply. Owned and operated by the New York Power Authority, the plant diverts water from the Niagara River to generate electricity, contributing significantly to the local economy.
