The Labrador Sea is a significant body of water nestled between the Labrador Peninsula in Canada and Greenland. It forms an integral part of the North Atlantic Ocean, embodying a complex and dynamic marine environment. This sea is flanked by the continental shelves to the southwest, northwest, and northeast, and connects to the Baffin Bay through the Davis Strait to the north.
Formation and Geology
The Labrador Sea's formation is attributed to the tectonic activities associated with the separation of the North American Plate and the Greenland Plate, which began approximately 60 million years ago during the Paleocene epoch and ceased around 40 million years ago. Beneath its waters lies a sedimentary basin that developed during the Cretaceous period, now obscured under the continental shelves.
Hydrology and Oceanography
The Labrador Sea is renowned for its role in global oceanic circulation, being a major source of the North Atlantic Deep Water. This cold, dense water mass flows at depth along the western edge of the North Atlantic, significantly influencing the thermohaline circulation also known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). The sea's interaction with the Labrador Current, a cold ocean current flowing southward from the Arctic Ocean, and its mixing with the Gulf Stream, plays a critical role in regulating the climate.
The Labrador Sea is also home to one of the world's largest turbidity current channel systems, known as the Northwest Atlantic Mid-Ocean Channel (NAMOC), which extends for thousands of kilometers along the sea floor, directing sediment and nutrients toward the Atlantic Ocean.
