Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 2
The Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2), officially known as Federal Route 28, is a vital arterial route that facilitates traffic flow around the bustling city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The road serves as a critical component of the city's road network, linking various highways and expressways, thereby providing a seamless travel experience within the Klang Valley region.
The Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 2 forms part of a larger ring road system designed to alleviate congestion in the city by redirecting traffic from the city center and offering alternative routes for vehicles traveling between different parts of Greater Kuala Lumpur. Spanning approximately 65.0 km (40.4 mi), it is primarily associated with Federal Route 28, although it also includes segments of the Damansara–Puchong Expressway and the Shah Alam Expressway.
Route Description
The MRR2 begins at the Sri Damansara Interchange, which serves as its zeroth kilometre. This vital interchange connects with the Damansara–Puchong Expressway and the DUKE Extension Expressway. From there, the road extends to intersect with several key routes, including the Federal Route 54.
Construction and Development
The construction of the Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 2 was executed in three main phases, each addressing different segments of the route:
-
Bandar Sri Damansara–Kepong–Batu Caves–Gombak: This segment links several important neighborhoods and is crucial for routing traffic towards the northern parts of the city.
-
Gombak–Ulu Klang–Ampang: Connecting the western and eastern suburbs, this section bridges the gap between various urban areas.
-
Ampang–Pandan–Cheras–Sri Petaling: This final phase facilitates connectivity to southeastern localities, completing the loop of the MRR2.
The project was a collaboration between the Public Works Department (JKR) and Bumi Hiway Sdn Bhd, with the entire construction costing approximately RM880 million. The MRR2 also includes LED street lights as part of a pioneer installation program aimed at enhancing road safety.
Importance and Impact
The Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 2 serves as a backbone for transportation within the metropolitan area, linking to several major expressways, such as the Kuala Lumpur–Karak Expressway and the Ampang–Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway. By providing these connections, the MRR2 facilitates efficient movement of goods and people, contributing significantly to the economic vitality of Kuala Lumpur.
