Kuala Kangsar: The Royal Town of Perak
Kuala Kangsar is a prominent royal town located in the state of Perak in Malaysia. Known for its historical and cultural significance, the town is situated at the confluence of the Kangsar River and the Perak River, approximately 25 kilometers northwest of Ipoh, the state's capital, and 98 kilometers southeast of George Town, Penang.
Historical Significance
Kuala Kangsar holds a pivotal place in Malaysian history. It was the administrative seat of the first British Resident in the Malay Peninsula, James W. W. Birch, until his assassination in 1875, an event that marked a significant moment in the colonial history of Malaysia. The town was the capital of Perak until 1876.
In 1897, Kuala Kangsar was the venue for the first Conference of Rulers of the Federated Malay States, known as the Durbar, which was a landmark event in the administrative history of the region.
Administration and Governance
The town is administered by the Kuala Kangsar Municipal Council, known formerly as the Kuala Kangsar District Council, which governed from January 1, 1980, until February 17, 2004. As a royal town, Kuala Kangsar plays a significant role in the Perak's complex succession system and houses the Istana Iskandariah, the royal palace of the Sultan of Perak.

One of the most notable educational establishments in Kuala Kangsar is the Malay College Kuala Kangsar, often abbreviated as MCKK.
