The county was named after Mifflin Kenedy, a prominent 19th-century businessman and rancher who played a significant role in the development of the region. Kenedy, originally from Pennsylvania, made his fortune in the steamboat and cattle industries, and his influence remains prominent in the area through the Kenedy Ranch, also known as La Parra Ranch.
