The airport is named after Kempe Gowda I, a historical chieftain who founded Bengaluru in the 16th century. Before the current airport, HAL Airport served as the primary airport for Bengaluru until its operations were shifted to Kempegowda International Airport in 2008. The transition was part of a broader initiative to handle increasing passenger traffic and to expand aviation infrastructure in the region.
