John Barry (March 25, 1745 – September 13, 1803) was an Irish-born American naval officer, often hailed as the "Father of the American Navy." He served with distinction in the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War and later in the United States Navy.

Born in County Wexford, Ireland, Barry emigrated to Philadelphia and quickly established himself as a skilled merchant captain. During the Revolutionary War, he commanded several ships, including the USS Lexington and the USS Alliance, and achieved notable victories against British forces.

In 1794, President George Washington appointed Barry as a commodore and tasked him with the construction and command of the first ships of the United States Navy. He played a crucial role in the development and leadership of the Navy, earning him the title of "Commodore."
