Jeddah Tower
Jeddah Tower, also known as the Kingdom Tower, is a megatall skyscraper currently under construction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Upon completion, it is expected to achieve the milestone of becoming the world's first building to reach a height of 1,000 meters (3,281 feet). This ambitious project is a centerpiece of the larger Jeddah Economic City development.
Background and Vision
The vision for Jeddah Tower was spearheaded by Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, chairman of Kingdom Holding Company, which is a primary partner in the Jeddah Economic Company. The project's inception was geared towards symbolizing Saudi Arabia’s economic growth and showcasing architectural innovation. Originally envisioned as a "Mile-High Tower," the final height was revised to approximately 1,000 meters due to engineering considerations.
Design and Architecture
The design for the Jeddah Tower was conceived by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, a firm renowned for its expertise in designing supertall skyscrapers. The architectural blueprint reflects a modernist style that complements the ambitious stature of the building. The tower is designed to incorporate mixed-use spaces, including residential, commercial, and hospitality sectors, distributed across its expansive vertical layout.
Construction Progress
Construction of the Jeddah Tower began in 2013, with initial progress being promising. However, the project faced several delays due to labor disputes, most notably linked to the 2017–2019 Saudi Arabian purge and the global COVID-19 pandemic. These challenges paused construction until a new request for proposals was issued in September 2023. Work is projected to resume by January 2025, with an estimated completion timeline of 2028.
Economic and Cultural Impact
Jeddah Tower is not just an architectural marvel but also an economic catalyst for the region's economy. The project aims to create a vibrant urban ecosystem within the Jeddah Economic City, featuring residential units, office spaces, luxury hotels, and retail outlets. It symbolizes the kingdom’s aspiration towards modernization and diversification beyond oil.
Comparison with Other Structures
The Jeddah Tower, upon completion, will surpass the Burj Khalifa in Dubai as the tallest building in the world. It will be among other megatall structures like the Bionic Tower and Rise Tower, each representing human ingenuity in pushing the boundaries of skyscraper design.
