Jaén Province

The Province of Jaén is a significant administrative region located in the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. Renowned for its rich history and cultural heritage, Jaén is also recognized for its pivotal role in the production of olive oil, often earning it the title "World Capital of Olive Oil" due to its substantial contribution to global production.

Geography

Jaén covers an area of approximately 13,484 square kilometers and is characterized by its mountainous terrain and extensive olive groves. The Sierra de Cazorla mountain range is one of the notable geographical features of the province. The highest point in Jaén is Pico Mágina, which stands at 2,165 meters above sea level.

The province borders the provinces of Ciudad Real, Albacete, Granada, and Córdoba, offering a diverse landscape that includes four national parks and several other protected natural areas.

Demographics

As of July 2023, Jaén has a population of approximately 619,938 residents, with about one-sixth residing in its capital city, Jaén. The province encompasses 97 municipalities, with Linares being the second-largest city.

Economy

The economy of Jaén is predominantly agrarian, with olive cultivation being the most important agricultural activity. The province hosts more than 66 million olive trees, spread over 550,000 hectares, making it the largest producer of olive oil globally. Jaén contributes around 45% of Spain's olive oil production and 20% of the world's supply.
