The Isère department is a landlocked administrative region in the southeast of France. It is part of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and is named after the Isère River. The department had a population of approximately 1,271,166 as of 2019. The prefecture of Isère is Grenoble.

Historical Adjustments

In 1852, due to urban growth around Lyon, several communes including Bron, Vaulx-en-Velin, Vénissieux, and Villeurbanne were transferred to the Rhône department. The second adjustment occurred in 1967 with the creation of the Urban Community of Lyon, which necessitated the transfer of 23 additional Isère communes.
