Historical Background
Hermosa's beginnings can be traced back to the late 19th century. Originally part of Jefferson Township, Cook County, it began to develop as a suburb following the construction of railroads in the 1880s. The community was officially named Hermosa in 1885 when a post office was established at Kenney's rail station. This change was necessary because there was already another post office named Garfield. The name Hermosa was chosen to avoid duplication and reflects the scenic nature of the area.

On December 31, 2018, the Hermosa Bungalow Historic District was recognized and added to the National Register of Historic Places. By the year 2000, Hermosa reached a population high of nearly 27,000 residents, making it one of the most densely populated neighborhoods in Chicago at the time.
