Golden Screen Cinemas

Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) is the largest cinema exhibitor chain in Malaysia. It's a wholly-owned subsidiary of PPB Group Berhad, which is part of the Kuok Group, one of Asia's most renowned conglomerates. It plays a significant role in the film exhibition industry in Malaysia, dominating a substantial part of the market.

History and Development

Golden Screen Cinemas was founded in 1987, originally operating under the name Golden Communications Circuit. This entity was a joint venture between Golden Harvest, a major film production company based in Hong Kong, and the Malaysian conglomerate PPB Group. The initial cinemas were leased from Shaw Brothers Studio, a pioneer in film entertainment in the region.

In 1997, Golden Communications Circuit merged with the Malaysian branch of the Cathay Organisation, resulting in the rebranding of the company to Golden Screen Cinemas. This merger marked a pivotal expansion for GSC, solidifying its position as a leader in the Malaysian cinema market.

Expansion and Facilities

Golden Screen Cinemas has continued to expand its operations, now boasting over 600 screens across 70 locations in Malaysia. In 1999, GSC made a landmark achievement by opening Asia's largest multiplex at the time, GSC Mid Valley, located in the Mid Valley Megamall with 18 screens.

GSC's facilities are known for their state-of-the-art technology, including advanced sound systems like Dolby ATMOS, enhancing the cinematic experience for audiences. The chain offers various premium cinema experiences, including Gold Class and IMAX screenings, catering to diverse audience preferences.

Acquisitions and Market Influence

Over the years, GSC has acquired significant assets in the cinema industry. In 2021, during the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic, GSC expanded its influence by acquiring assets from MBO Cinemas, which had gone into liquidation.

Through strategic mergers and acquisitions, GSC has maintained its leading position in Malaysia's cinema industry, competing with other major players such as TGV Cinemas and LFS Cinemas.

Contribution to Malaysian Film Industry

Golden Screen Cinemas is more than just a cinema exhibitor; it plays an instrumental role in the Malaysian film industry. GSC is involved in distributing a wide range of movies and content, supporting both international film releases and local Malaysian productions. The company frequently showcases films from Astro Shaw and other leading Malaysian production houses, contributing significantly to the promotion of local talent and storytelling.
