Golden Lancehead

The golden lancehead, scientifically known as Bothrops insularis, is an extremely venomous pit viper species belonging to the subfamily Crotalinae of the family Viperidae. This snake is found exclusively on Ilha da Queimada Grande, an island located off the coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The island is famously known as the "Snake Island" due to the dense population of these vipers.

Physical Characteristics

The name "golden lancehead" is derived from the distinctive light yellowish-brown color of their underside and the lance-like shape of their head, a characteristic trait of species in the genus Bothrops. The golden lancehead is considered one of the most venomous snakes in Latin America, with no recognized subspecies.

Habitat and Ecology

The snake's habitat, Ilha da Queimada Grande, is a crucial ecological niche. The golden lancehead primarily feeds on birds that migrate to the island, due to the scarcity of mammals on the island. This ecological interaction highlights the snake's adaptation to its isolated environment.

Venom and Human Interaction

Envenomation from the golden lancehead can be fatal. The effects include swelling, local pain, nausea and vomiting, blood blisters, bruising, blood in vomit and urine, intestinal bleeding, kidney failure, brain hemorrhage, and severe necrosis of muscular tissue. The mortality rate ranges from 0.5–3.0% with treatment and escalates to 7.0% without treatment.

Reproduction

Golden lanceheads are ovoviviparous, meaning they give birth to live young. The mating season occurs in August and September and can take place both in trees and on the ground. On average, a female gives birth to about 6.5 young per gravidity.

Conservation

The golden lancehead is classified as critically endangered due to its restricted distribution and habitat threats. Conservation efforts are crucial for the survival of this unique species, especially due to its limited range and the specific ecological role it plays on Ilha da Queimada Grande.
