Managed by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, this natural area features awe-inspiring waterfalls and dense coastal forests, making it a cherished retreat for nature enthusiasts and hikers.

Geography and Features

Situated northeast of Allegany, Oregon, the park is nestled along the East Fork Millicoma River, where Glenn Creek and its tributary, Silver Creek, cascade over the striking Golden Falls and Silver Falls. These falls are the centerpiece of the park, drawing visitors eager to witness their natural beauty.

The area is characterized by its lush vegetation, including large maple, alder, and Oregon myrtle trees. The towering old-growth fir and cedar trees further add to the park's serene ambiance.

History

The origins of the Golden and Silver Falls State Natural Area date back to 1936 when the Waterford Lumber Company donated land to establish the park. This transfer was part of a collaborative effort with Coos County and the state to improve the road, making it accessible for log trucks, which in turn opened the area to public access. By 1938, Coos County deeded an additional 17.27 acres, including Silver Falls, to the state. This land was initially donated for park purposes by the Weyerhauser Timber Company in 1935.

The park's name pays homage to C. B. Golden, the first grand chancellor of the Knights of Pythias of Oregon, who was an early visitor to the area. His fondness for the site is commemorated through its name.

Recreational Activities

Visitors to the park can enjoy a variety of recreational activities amidst the stunning natural scenery. The 1.4-mile hike to the top of Golden Falls provides breathtaking views of the cascading waterfall, offering an eagle's-eye perspective of the lush surroundings. The park's small parking and picnic area, located along the banks of Glenn and Silver Creeks, serves as a perfect spot for relaxation and reflection.
